If you take to the streets of Shibuya you'll find groups of women who have come to define the district inside the heart of Tokyo. These are Gyaru (ギャル) and they've come to be a defining Japanese subculture in the new millennium. Known for their flashy styles and makeup, they have also crafted a lifestyle and values of their own.  Interestingly this subculture has found new life among young women across the world. This article will explore the history of Gyaru and why women from countries like the US and Bahrain have come to adopt this fashion based lifestyle.
